 Henry Van de Velde - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His own house, Bloemenwerf in Uccle, was inspired by the English arts and crafts movement.
He also designed interiors and furniture for the influential exhibition "Art Nouveau", organized by Samuel Bing in Paris in 1895.
Van de Velde was one of the first architects and furniture designers who worked in the abstract style with curved lines that would become characteristic for the Art Nouveau.

 DESIGNERS - Henry VAN DE VELDE
By designing furniture and interiors for the Paris art galleries of Samuel Bing in 1896, van de Velde was responsible for bringing the Art Nouveau style to Paris.
But he was interested not so much in the style as in the philosophy of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement in England.
He became known internationally with the creation of a number of interiors and furniture for Samuel Bing's gallery "L'art nouveau" in Paris (1896).

Siegfried 'Samuel' Bing was very much responsible for bringing Asian art to Europe and, most importantly, into the consciousness of the likes of Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec.
The resulting movement, l'Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil), which was named after Bing's studio in Paris, is explored here in meticulous detail.
Over 400 works which passed through Bing's gallery are on display, including paintings, glassware, sculpture, ceramics and even furniture.

In Montmartre there was a little shop with Japanese prints, called the Bing Gallery after its owner Samuel Bing.
Bing kept thousands of Japanese prints on stock.
The Bing Gallery was next to van Gogh's apartment and Vincent spent days in the shop and became an avid collector of ukiyo-e.

A high point in the evolution of Art Nouveau was the Universal Exposition of 1900 in Paris, in which the "modern style" triumphed in every medium.

Organic forms, sensuous curving lines, vibrant iridescence, and a general feeling of lightness are hallmarks of the movement.
The name “Art Nouveau” came from the Parisian gallery owner, Samuel Bing, who called his pavilion “L'Art Nouveau.” Bing was the first to recognize and exhibit the works of these avant-garde artists, which included the American, Louis Comfort Tiffany.
Tiffany, already known for his stained glass windows, became a leader in the movement when he opened his glass factory in Corona, New York.

CI SAMUEL LIM BING HE 1999 had been a fruitful year for our unit.
We participated and did well in many Inter-unit competitions and to cap it all we received the Most Improved Unit Award at the end of that year.
Our very own ex-cadet, WCI Lee Qing Yu continued to serve in the unit while CI Samuel Lim who had just completed his CI course at the end of last year began serving in the unit.

In 1895, Samuel Bing opened a shop in Paris called La Maison de l’Art Nouveau (literally – The House of the New Art).
Bing’s shop unofficially gave the name to the style of design that had been developing in Europe since the 1880’s.
Characterized by sinuous lines and natural forms, Art Nouveau touched every form of design: from jewellery and household objects like glassware and metalwork, to book and poster design and even architecture.
