Samuel Hardy (~1758–October 17, 1785) was an American lawyer and statesman from Virginia, who served as a delegate to the Continental Congress.
Born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, Samuel was educated at Virginia's College of William and Mary, began the practice of law, and served in the Virginia House of Delegates.
Hardy died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania while traveling to the Congress, and is buried in the Christ Church Cemetery there.

Since Hardy was the author of the first 34 chapters, and had a hand in two of the remaining four, it is customary to refer to the Life as an autobiography, but in fact the situation is more complicated.
Gittings adds greatly to our knowledge of Hardy's family background, and of the labourers, cobblers and servants who were his relatives in Puddletown, and a main theme of his study is the pull exerted by Hardy's loyalty to, or as Gittings often represents it, his inability to escape from these family ties.
He provides a valuable account of Hardy's relationship with Eliza Nichols, is informative about Hardy's dealings with his editors and publishers, and is more balanced than his predecessors when describing Hardy's relationship with Emma, noting for example the mutually accommodating self-sufficiency of their lives in the later years.

HARDY, Samuel, statesman, born in Isle of Wight county, Virginia, about 1758; died in New York city in October, 1785.
He was a son of Richard Hardy, and descended from George Hardy, who represented that county in the house of burgesses 1642-'52.
Samuel was educated at William and Mary college in 1776-'81, began the practice of law, was in the house of delegates one or two sessions, and in June, 1781, was appointed a member of the executive council.
