General Sir Samuel James Browne, VC, GCB, KCSI (3 October 1824 - 14 March 1901) was a British Army cavalry officer in India and the Near East, best known today as the namesake of the Sam Browne belt.
Browne led the 2nd Punjab in several engagements, and was decorated for action during the Bozdar Expedition in 1857, being promoted to captain.
In an engagement with the rebels, Captain Browne, whilst advancing upon the enemy's position, pushed on with one orderly sowar upon a 9-pounder gun and attacked the gunners, preventing them from re-loading and attacking the infantry who were advancing to the attack.

Samuel was a carpenter, hired with William Allen to build an ammunition house for the town of Salem, on 28 August 1637.
Samuel Archer first appeared in the court records as marshal on 6 July 1647, and at the court of 7 April 1649, was again appointed to this office and he appeared in the court records regularly in this capacity until June 1666, when he resigned the office.
Samuel had debts totaling 195 pounds 14 shillings; which, after various allowances, meant that the creditors could be paid off at the rate of fourteen shilling to the pound.

Sam Browne belts are a combination of a pistol belt or garrison belt and a shoulder strap (and D-rings).
Samuel J. Browne of the 36th Bengal Native Infantry (later General Sir Sam Browne VC, GCB, KCSI) who received orders to raise a regiment of Punjab cavalry in Lahore to be designated the 2nd Punjab Irregular Cavalry.
Browne won the Victoria Cross on 31 August 1858 for action near Seerporah during the Indian Mutiny.

Charles H. Browne, Jr., was educated in the public schools of Kansas City, Missouri, and for two years attended the academic department of Washburn College at Topeka.

There is extensive correspondence between Browne and his parents from 1914 to 1948 as well as with his sister, Rebecca (Browne) Tarlow from 1929 to 1946.
Browne also provides a provocative commentary about the life he led and the education he received at the Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, Ohio, during the early twentieth century as well as his impressions of the renown leader of American reform Judaism, Rabbi Stephen Samuel Wise.
Browne's European travel journal from May 22 to November 8, 1926, contains an excellent account of Jews in the countries he visited and the influence of Catholicism on French Jews in regard to services and dress.
