He was elected to the four provincial congresses (1774-76), presiding at the third and at the fourth, which passed the Halifax Resolves declaring for independence of the colonies; served in the new state senate; and represented North Carolina in the Continental Congress (1780-82).
Johnston was governor of North Carolina (1787-89) and presided over the convention that rejected the U.S. Constitution (1788) and over the one (1789) at which North Carolina finally ratified it.
Johnston was preceded in death by her husband, F. Maddox Johnston.

Captain Samuel R. Johnston was an engineering officer in the Army of Northern Virginia during the Gettysburg Campaign, and it has long been questioned whether or not he was supposed to be the guide for Lt. Gen.
Johnston wrote that after leaving the Round Tops he rode along the base to beyond the area occupied by Hood’s Division and "where there was a cavalry fight (either Farnsworth or Merritt).
Johnston admitted that there was "the usual delay in finding headquarters." (Either Lee had moved his headquarters, which seems unlikely, or Johnston is implying, in an off-handed way, that he was lost.

Born in Scotland as the nephew of NC Royal Governor Gabriel Johnston, Samuel Johnston came to Onslow County at the age of three.
As a supporter of the colonial revolt, he served as president of one of the provincial congresses and actually was governor during the flight of Governor Martin and before the election of Governor Caswell.
Johnston was elected NC governor in 1787, during the decade following the American Revolution.

Samuel Johnson was born ca 1775/94 (per 1820 census) or to narrow it down more, ca 1790/91 (per age of "about 31" as given on tombstone) in South Carolina, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Horry County.
Samuel Johnson's estate records (shared with me by Deryl Young) give his widow as Dorcas, and his heirs (all minors) as Gilbert, Samuel, Elizabeth and Hugh, with Thomas A. Beaty as the guardian.
Samuel and Dorcas had at least four children as proven by his estate records, and possibly one other per the 1820 census.

Samuel was educated for the bar, and in 1767-'72 was clerk of the superior court of Chowan county, North Carolina, and at the same time a naval officer under the crown.
He soon became known as a politician and lawyer, was an ardent patriot, a member of the assembly in 1769, where he was placed on its standing committee of inquiry and correspondence, an active member of the first two Provincial congresses, and presided over the third and fourth.
Johnston established a factory at Syracuse, New York, and in 1868 bought one at Brockport, New York, and organized the Johnston harvester company.
