Samuel Medary (February 25, 1801–November 7, 1864) was an American politician who served as the 3rd Territorial Governor of Minnesota from April 23, 1857 to May 24, 1858 appointed by President James Buchanan.
Samuel Medary was also Governor of Kansas Territory from 1858 to 1860.
Medary was indicted by a federal grand jury in 1864 for conspiracy against the government and was arrested.

Governor Medary was pleased that the volatile situation during the border wars had calmed down, and he encouraged Brown to foster an environment focused on "peace and industry." The governor also hoped that, with things settling down, more emigrants would come into Kansas.
Samuel Medary presented a very detailed message about why he was vetoring a bill prohibiting slavery in Kansas that had been passed by the territorial House of Representatives.

Medary's Administration.—Samuel Medary was appointed governor of Kansas Territory on Nov. 19, 1858.
Medary was importuned to call a special session of the legislature, in the hope that it might be able to devise some means of relief, but he declined to do so, and traveled over the territory to ascertain the conditions.
Medary did not return at once, however, and on Nov. 22 he telegraphed Gen. Cass from Columbus, Ohio, as follows: "I have just received alarming news from Fort Scott, K. T., of which you are by this time apprised.

The first actual site of Medary was located by the Dakota Land Company out of Minnesota which was led by Alpheus G. Fuller and Major Franklin J. DeWitt and accompanied by engineer Samuel A. Medary, Jr.
The county of Brookings was formally organized in Medary in the cabin of Martin Trygstad on July 3, 1871.
Many merchants of Medary and Fountain packed up their businesses and belongings and moved to Brookings, which was surveyed and platted on October 3 and 4, 1879.

It included seven members: William R. Griffith, the chairman, of Bourbon county, Samuel D. Houston of Riley county, C. McClellan of Jefferson county, Edward Stokes of Douglas county, John A. Middleton of Marshall county, Samuel Hipple of Leavenworth county, and Caleb May of Atchison county.
