Merrill (See page 100.) is not in accord with General Merrill with respect to family temperament, and in the previous chapter it has appeared that similar family names were known in England at a much earlier date than 1520.
Merrill lived in the house which had been the parsonage of his father, and died when 88 years of age.
Merrill, a son of the emigrant, left Newbury soon after the death of his father, and is supposed to have been adopted by Gregory Wolterton of Hartford.

 MERRILL FAMILY HISTORY
Samuel Merrill was born Sept. 25, 1780, in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut, to Jared Merrill and Abigail Phelps.
In 1819 a number of Merrills and Odells moved to Genesee County, N.Y. The move was made during the winter to lessen the chances of another encounter with the Indians.
Webmaster's Note 5: If Ancestral File data are correct for Samuel Merrill, then he would have been 82 at the time of his marriage to Anna, 83 when their first child was born and 85 when their second child was born.

 Notes for Benjamin MERRILL, "CAPT."
Benjamin Merrill was captured, convicted of treason, and sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered.
If Captain Merrill with his 300 men had reached the Alamance the day before the battle, the Regulators would have had a commanding officer and the result might have been quite different from what it was.
One of the seven Baptists by the name of Merrill was executed; and he, at the point of death, did not justify his conduct, but bitterly condemned it and blamed two men (of very different religion) for deceiving him into the rebellion.

 SAMUEL MERRILL PAPERS, 1812-1934
Samuel Merrill (1792-1855) was a native of Peacham, Vermont.
The personal and family correspondence includes Merrill, his wife Jane, and other scattered members of his family: those who remained in Peacham, his brother David who held various ministerial posts in New England, and a nephew who rented a farm from Merrill in Illinois.
The correspondence is largely between Merrill and the New York firm of Winslow and Perkins, culminating in the appointment of H. Hall as superintendent, and several letters from Merrill to Hall detailing their disagreements.

 Data Comparing One-Winner Rules
[Samuel Merrill III coined this term and defined it: "The Condorcet efficiency of a voting procedure is the proportion or percentage of a class of elections (for which a Condorcet candidate exists) in which the voting system chooses the Condorcet candidate as winner." (Merrill: Glossary)]
(Merrill, page 70) This does not recommend plurality since its efficiency drops as the number of contestants rises and all other systems scored higher.
Simulations by Bordley and Merrill both found Condorcet's rule picked winners a bit lower in utility than Borda which uses all information in one step.

 ALTERNATIVE VOTING SYSTEMS
The supporters of c (class III) transfer their 3.2 votes to their next-highest choice (i.e., a), giving a more than a quota of 7.l.
Thus in Example 2, b is the Condorcet candidate: b is preferred to a by l4 voters (class II, III, and IV voters), whereas a is preferred to b by only 7 voters (class I); similarly, b is preferred to c, 13-8, and to d, l8-3.
Because approval of a less-preferred candidate could hurt a more-preferred approved candidate, the voter is still faced with the decision of where to draw the line between acceptable and nonacceptable candidates.
