Samuel Nelson (10 November 1792 - 13 December 1873) was an American attorney and U.S. Supreme Court justice.
Nelson was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1845 by President John Tyler to succeed the deceased Justice Smith Thompson and served as a Justice until his retirement in 1872.
Samuel Nelson died in Cooperstown, New York in 1873.

The first settler of Nelson township was Luther Stone, who arrived in 1836 and staked his claim along with the help of his sons, Burrill and Samuel.
The Town of Nelson was platted in Dec. 22, 1862 on land belonging to WiIlard S. Pope and Samuel Nelson.
John McKinstry, one of the first settlers in Nelson, arrived in 1857 and started the town of Nelson as a station on the Northwestern Railroad line, six and a half miles west of Dixon.

The population of Nelson Township in 1940 was 651.

Nelson, a Democrat, was viewed as a careful and noncontroversial judge who would be more appealing to the Democratically-controlled Senate, and indeed he was.
To the extent that he achieved notoriety, Nelson (along with Justice John A. Campbell) attempted to avoid the Civil War though conciliation efforts between north and south in 1860-61.
Nelson retired from the Court in 1872 and died a year later.

NELSON, Samuel Kelsey, clergyman, born near Jonesborough, Washington County, Tennessee, 9 Oct:., 1787 ; died in Tallahassee, Florida, 7 May. 1827.
In 1828 he succeeded his brother Samuel as pastor of the Presbyterian church in Danville, Kentucky, and in 1830 he removed to Missouri and established Nation college, twelve miles from Palmyra, of which he became president.
In 1836, in consequence of the slavery question, Dr. Nelson, who was an ardent advocate of emancipation, removed to the neighborhood of Quincy, Illinois, and established an institute for the education of young men.

Samuel Nelson Moyers, the son of Jacob and Sarah [Rogers] Moyers, was the paternal grandfather of Hattie Mae Moyers.
He was born five miles north of Carrollton in Greene County, Illinois, on January 31, 1827, and he lived until January 13, 1920, when he died in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa (possibly it was Mediapolis, as that was where Sam lived in his later years).
Samuel Nelson Moyers married Lucinda Hopkins Deen (whose correct family name was spelled "Dean," but several family members used the "Deen" spelling) on August 6, 1846.
