Samuel Ogle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born a member of the aristocracy in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England, Samuel Ogle became a captain of a cavalry regiment in the British Army.
In 1743, Samuel Ogle built a mansion on a 7,000-acre tobacco plantation in what today is known as Bowie, Maryland where he founded the "Belair Stud," a stable of thoroughbred horses that would continue in operation for more than two-hundred years.
Samuel Ogle died in 1752 and was interred at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Annapolis.

Ogle married Anne, daughter of Benjamin Tasker, a member of the Council, and niece of Thomas Bladen and, while he was in the Province, lived at Belair in Prince George's County.

Origin & History of the Ogle and Ogles Family Association
Twenty-three Ogle descendants from across the United States, including family researchers, historians, and genealogists, convened the first Ogle Family Symposium, Oct. 2-5, 1979, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Their purpose was to exchange information, pool and study available data about the Ogle family and establish a viable, official family organization.
Nearly all of the 100,000+ Ogles in North America are descendants of either John Ogle, immigrant to Delaware (1664), or Samuel Ogle, three times Governor of Maryland (1731-32; 1733-42; and 1747-52).

Benjamin, governor of Maryland 1798-1801, was the son of Samuel Ogle (1694-1752), who was governor of Maryland three times between 1732 and his death.
Samuel and Benjamin also owned Belair in Prince George's County, which is probably the reason there was never a plantation house on Horne Point or on any of the Hill land north of South River… the Hills had plantations south of South River and the Ogles had Belair.
Benjamin Ogle died in 1809 and was buried privately and quietly "on his farm near Annapolis" — presumably somewhere on the President.

The two-story brick house located a block from Gate 3 of the Naval Academy was built in 1739 by Dr. William Stevenson, who died shortly after finishing construction.  The house became a rental property and was rented by Samuel Ogle, Governor of Maryland, from 1747 until his death in 1752.  Eventually, Mrs.
Ogle deeded the property to her son, Benjamin.  It was Benjamin Ogle with whom George Washington dined at Ogle Hall on October 1, 1773.
Benjamin Ogle began to renovate and "embellish" Ogle Hall; it was noted that the addition of the ballroom wing, the cantilevered staircase and the three classical doorways were added.  Benjamin Ogle became Governor of Maryland from 1798 to 1801.  James Steel purchased the house from the Ogle estate in 1815.
