Samuel Rawson Gardiner was born in 1829 in Ropley, Hampshire, to Scottish parents.
In 1877 Gardiner had been made Professor of Modern History by his university, and in 1881 he was awarded a Civil List Pension by Gladstone, at the instigation of Lord Acton.
Despite now being financially secure, he still continued in his educational work, which he had originally begun in order to feed his young family; his work in both university extension schemes and women's education in London and elsewhere was deeply influential and left a permanent mark on those movements.
