Samuel Rhoads Fisher was the son of Samuel Wharton (1764-1817) and Elizabeth Rhoads (1770-1796) Fisher of Philadelphia.
Samuel Wharton Fisher was the younger brother of Barbara Fisher Burket (born 1742 Philadelphia, PA), grandmother of David Burket and the author's 5th great grandmother.
Although Samuel Rhoads Fisher was also a planter, in the Fisher family tradition he was in the shipping industry and his correspondence particularly reflects concern with the navigability of the bays and maritime policy affecting Texas ports and trade.

Samuel Mickle Fox I served in a number of public offices, including the City Council, the Common Council (1793-1797), and the Upper Chamber (1797-1800), and he was both an incorporator of the Bank of Pennsylvania and its President from 1797-1808.
After the Indian treaties of 1784 and 1785, Samuel and his brother George acquired immense tracts of land in northwestern Pennsylvania near the Allegheny River north of the Clarion that were patented in 1796.
Samuel's son George (1806-1882) was born in a house on the southeast corner of 5th and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia.

By the time the final bricks were laid, Rhoads' architectural design of the west and center sections of the building were altered somewhat, but the entire structure remains very close to his original plan.

In 1771 a survey seeking practical routes for navigation and land carriage travel between the Susquehanna, Schuylkill and Lehigh Rivers was undertaken by David Rittenhouse and Samuel Rhoads.
Perhaps it was when he was appointed president of a commission concerned with the construction of rough dams to make the Schuylkill navigable, a project for which telescopic levels probably were required.
In 1774 Rittenhouse served with Samuel Holland in setting the 42nd parallel between New York and Pennsylvania and in surveying the Delaware River.

Julia Bedford Gill, the wife of Ephriam Tomlinson Gill, a descendant of two of the most important founding families, is credited with being the moving force behind the project.
She had a great deal of support and assistance from her two co-founders, Samuel Nicholson Rhoads, a descendant of several early families, and James Lane Pennypacker, a descendant of a prominent Pennsylvania family.

On the 1st of July, 1807, the parties above mentioned transferred the mills and property belonging to Samuel Garrigues, "House Carpenter." The mills were run by the latter for a few years, but by reason of a scarcity of water were finally abandoned.
William White was then doctor of divinity of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and later was far famed as a distinguished bishop of the same denomination.
On the 20th of February, 1834, it caught fire from the picker, and was entirely consumed, the insurance of ten thousand dollars covering but a small part of the loss.
