Samuel Scheidt (baptized November 3, 1587 - March 24, 1653) was a German composer, organist and teacher of the early Baroque era.
Scheidt was the first great German composer for the organ, and represents the flowering of the new north German style, which occurred largely as a result of the Protestant Reformation.
Scheidt's music is in two principal categories: instrumental music, including a large amount of keyboard music, mostly for organ; and sacred vocal music, some of which is a cappella and some of which uses a basso continuo or other instrumental accompaniment.

Scheidt attended public school, being instructed in music by the Kantor of the local Gymnasium, Matthäus Birkner, until he earned the position of organist at the Moritzkirche in Halle in 1604.
Scheidt served as court organist and secular keyboard composer to the Halle governing administrator, Christian Wilhelm of Brandenburg.

Samuel Scheidt (baptized November 3, 1587 – March 24, 1653) was a German composer, organist and teacher of the early Baroque era.
Scheidt was the first internationally significant German Baroque composer for the organ, and represents the flowering of the new north German style, which occurred largely as a result of the Protestant Reformation.
In addition to his chorale preludes, he wrote numerous fugues, suites of dances (which were often in a cyclic form, sharing a common ground bass) and fantasias.

Scheidt went even further in his "Canzon a 5 voci ad imitationem Bergamasca anglica" ("contrapuntal fantasy in imitation of the English Bergamasca"), in which the Bergamasca elements are pretty much unrecognizable.
It is based on a galliard for lute by the English lutenist John Dowland (Scheidt acknowledged as much when he rewrote tonight's galliard as a keyboard piece and called it "Galliarda Dulenti"), which in turn was part of a century-long tradition of battle pieces.
Scheidt's battle has trumpet calls answering each other in the characteristic 1-2-3-jump galliard rhythm, with the equally characteristic galliard "hemiola" at the ends of phrases, where a two-beat stress is imposed across the three-beat meter.

 HOASM: Samuel Scheidt
It was also during this period that Scheidt gained a reputation as an expert in organ construction; throughout his life he was often called upon to inspect new instruments.
Despite these unfortunate events, Scheidt continued to publish music: the fourth and final volume of his Ludi musici appeared in 1627, the Liebliche Krafft-Blümlein was brought out in 1635, and four volumes of Geistliche Concerte were published between 1631 and 1640.
Scheidt was one of Germany's most distinguished composers at that time, especially in the field of keyboard music.
