		Samuel Shellabarger Memorial Prize in Creative Writing The income from this fund is awarded annually to a senior who, in fulfillment of the senior thesis requirement, shows great promise of future literary excellence in the judgement of the faculty committee.
		Samuel Shellabarger, who died in 1954, was a 1909 graduate of Princeton and taught in the English Department here for several years after earning a Ph.D. at Harvard.
		The New York Times called Shellabarger “one of the most popular historical novelists of modern times.” His seven works of historical fiction were: The Black Gale (1929), Captain from Castile (1945), Prince of Foxes (1947), The King’s Cavalier (1950), Lord Vanity (1953), and The Token and Tolbecken (published posthumously in 1955 and 1956 respectively).

		The younger Shellabarger life was something of a bridge between the early US - via the upbringing of his grandparents - and that of the fast emerging changes of the first half of the 20th century.
		Shellabarger spun out another yarn two years later (1947) of the period a decade earlier in the 16th century of Italy and dealing with the machinations of Cesare Borgia, Prince of Foxes.
		Shellabarger wrote another Renaissance novel, this dealing with France during the wars of France I with Emperor Charles V. This was The King's Chevalier which was published in 1950 and another success, but it was not optioned for filming.

	Truth, Beauty and Shiny Objects
		I can't wait to read the translation (whenever that comes out) but apparently it's the conclusion of a trilogy.
		It was while trying to find the names of the first two novels (it seems that perhaps The Companions of Jéhu is the first one)that I came across Shellabarger, who wrote in the 1940's and '50's.
		I'll write more, but so far it looks very promising, and there are at least three more novels by this person.
