Webber wrote his new wife, Nannie Sturtevant, almost daily, filling the many pages with expressions of his love for her and for God, dreams of the couple’s future together, and answers to her questions.
Webber relates details of a prisoners-of-war exchange (4 August 1864) and tells how six hundred Confederate prisoners were to “be placed under fire on Morris island in retaliation for those the rebels have in Charleston.
Webber includes a sketch of the fence, but later admits that some of the prisoners had escaped the pen.

SAMUEL W. Samuel W. Webber, banker and capitalist of Muir, Ionia Co., was born in Newbury, Vt., May 25, 1823.
His father was engaged in farming, and when Samuel was four years old moved from Vermont to Steuben Co., N. He was one of a family of six brothers, and until he was twenty-three years old spent his time in farm-work and in attending the common school in winter.
Webber professes no form of religious belief, although he is a liberal supporter of churches of every denomination.
