King, who was part-Hawaiian, graduated from Saint Louis School and the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. He served in the Navy for 14 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander, before returning to Hawai'i in 1925 to work in real estate and insurance.
King returned to the military during World War II, then returned to Hawai'i to serve on the Governor's Emergency Housing Committee (1946), the Hawai'i Statehood Commission (1947 to 1953) and the 1950 Constitutional Convention, of which he was president.
King's term was marked by heated veto battles with the new Democrat-controlled Legislature, including a measure to raise the state excise tax from 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent.

He presided at a time when the issue of statehood for Hawai‘i was being debated in the U.S. Congress.
At one of these committee sessions, held in ‘Iolani Palace, one senator asked Governor King: “How do you handle your minority problems in Hawai‘i?” Governor King promptly replied: “Senator, in Hawai‘i we are all in the minority.” Shortly after, the Senate voted for statehood.

 Samuel Wilder King - Hawaii History - Governors
A native of Honolulu, Samuel King was the son of a sea captain, James A. King, who settled in Hawai`i in the 1860s and began an inter-island shipping business.
After receiving his early education in Hawai`i, Samuel King attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and entered active duty with the Navy after his graduation in 1910.
King's Navy duty continued through 1924, including action during World War I. During the 1920s and '30s, King returned to Hawai`i where he worked in government and on various commissions.

Statehood for Hawai'i was being considered as far back as the 1850s, during the reign of King Kamehameha III.
The king — fearing his isolated and defenseless Islands could be overtaken by foreign powers — began secret negotiations with the United States with the intent of making Hawai'i an American state.
Those talks came to an end when the king died on Dec. 15, 1854, and his successor, Crown Prince Alexander Liholiho, as well as powerful U.S. northerners, wanted nothing to do with such a treaty.
