	Sanhedrin - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
		Rabbi Dov Levanoni explained the steps that he and others claim led to reinstitution of semikha, renewed through a consensus of over seven hundred leading rabbis living in the Land of Israel.
		Rabbi Levanoni explained that Rabbi Moshe Halberstam, a senior rabbi on Jerusalem's Eda Haredis, became the first samukh [ordained one].
		This was after receiving approval by the leading rabbis followed by most of Israel's religious Jews and none of the hundreds of rabbis consulted via written letters expressed objections.

		The rule of samukh means that anywhere within a "mil," about a kilometer away from a city that reads on the fifteenth, also reads on the fifteenth.
		The Rambam rules that to read on the fifteenth of Adar, the city must be both samukh and nir'eh.

		Rabbi Michael Bar-Ron, with the Sanhedrin's blessing, travelled to the United States to meet with representatives of the Noahide movement and select members for the High Council.
