Samurai Champloo vol 1 Manga Review By Rich (Webmaster)
Jin is a cold calculating samurai, a man who has abandoned the samurai code of honour and fights simply to find a purpose.
Samurai Champloo is pretty much like no other samurai series you have read, packing its pages with tonnes of modern references and anachronistic urban cool which belies it’s feudal setting.
Despite the modern references Samurai Champloo vol 1 is a solid and extremely cool samurai actioner, with great characters and distinctive artwork that really delivers a feeling of speed and power in the frequent fight scenes.

Animefringe: March 2005 - Features - Samurai Champloo
The true draw of Samurai Champloo is the fights and the highly stylized flow of the anime, filled with urban imagery.
The strings between the hip-hop community and asian films go back to the kung-fu film boom of the 70's, with the thug culture finding inspiration in the system of loyalty and in having an appointed place in society that is found in the yakuza and in martial arts in general.
Samurai Champloo comes tailor-made for newcomers who want to see the latest in anime, and for veterans who are more than ready for another beautiful and epic story from Watanabe.

Samurai Champloo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The show is unique, in that it matches modern hip-hop music with a stylized form of samurai swordplay known as chambara, much in the same way Cowboy Bebop married science fiction to blues and jazz.
The world of Samurai Champloo is often anachronistic.
Samurai Champloo is an example of the popular chambara film and television genre--the trademarks are a setting in the Edo Period, a focus on samurai or other swordsman characters, and lots and lots of thrilling, dramatic fights.

Interestingly, Samurai Champloo has a very similar underlying theme to that of Cowboy Bebop, being that there is no running from the past.
Champloo is a great anime that should go down as one of the best of Watanabe’s works, almost on par with his masterpiece, Cowboy Bebop.
Samurai Champloo will definitely entertain you the first time you see it, but I can’t recommend it as a show you can watch over and over again.

Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked (ps2: 2006): Reviews
Samurai Champloo is a game that’s definitely more flash than substance, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a shallow game.
Samurai Champloo is by no means perfect--the repetition bug nibbles away now and again and the characters lack subtle animation nuances such as walking--but for what it is, and more over what its fans expect, it smells pretty damn sweet.
Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked does a lot that's interesting - for a little while, anyway - but we get the impression that this is the product of too much thought and not enough work.

 Samurai Champloo Profiles
Watanabe has been compared to Quentin Tarantino, and indeed, the first episode of Samurai Champloo evokes Tarantino's Pulp Fiction mixing timelines around by starting near the end, with the two main characters, then backing up and showing the events that led to Mugen and Jin finding themselves about to be beheaded.
What sets Samurai Champloo apart from the pack is the blending of historical culture with modern music, combined with a crisp visual design and dazzling action sequences evocative of The Animatrix, Crouching Tiger Flying Dragon, and Kill Bill Vol.1.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, the word "champloo" is an Okinawan word meaning a mixture, or "mixed together", hence the name Samurai Champloo, and the brilliant blending of cultures that makes this series one not to miss.

 Samurai Champloo
Samurai Champloo is a raging mass of bloody swords, off-the-hook humor, and anachronistic goodness, and for the most part, it is great fun.
The central problem is that, whereas Cowboy Bebop was effortlessly cool, Samurai Champloo is a little too self-aware in its desire to be hip.
It's a difficult concept to explain, but by way of analogy, it's like the post-punk kid who wears awesome clothes and cares nothing for the attention of the popular kids...but secretly wants to be liked just a little bit by the in crowd.

Review: Samurai Champloo, by Bad Jew   (Site not responding. Last check: )
All that Samurai Champloo is is Bebop, only in the Tokugawa period of Japanese history (around 1600-1800's).
The only thing Champloo's missing is the crazy hacker, Ed, but given the serious lack of networked computers in 18th century Japan, I don't think that would've been easy to work in.
In this case, Samurai Champloo is a decent piece, but forever doomed to lie in Bebop's shadow--much like Bach's kid, who was a descent composer but could never compare to Pa. If we forget about Bebop, then Champloo is a great anime with fight scenes the like of which I've never seen.

Samurai Champloo inevitably invites comparison to its revered predecessor, but is ultimately an inventive, sleekly animated show that more than lives up to all the skepticism and scrutiny with which it was initially greeted.
The anime is spear-headed by an unusual trio of characters: Mugen, an avant-garde samurai without any moral inhibitions; Jin, his mysterious, incredibly skilled companion and archrival; and Fuu, a young but strong-willed girl whose personal quest serves to tie together their adventures.
Samurai Champloo is utterly unlike any other samurai series in existence--its stand-alone episodes put a unique twist on the type of stories common to the genre, while the longer arcs are tightly plotted and exciting.
