SAN FERNANDO -- Representatives of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the US-based Environmental Protection of Asia (EPA) recently released some 106 hatchlings of the endangered Olive Ridley marine turtles to the China Sea.
Regidor de Leon, DENR regional executive director, said the project has helped transform the community of Sitio Pundaquit, San Antonio town in Zambales from poachers to protectors, as fisherfolk there are now guarding the turtle nesting and breeding grounds.
As this developed, DENR is set to forge a tripartite Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the local government of Zambales and the EPA to ensure continuous protection and conservation of the marine turtle in the province, and to work for the declaration of the area as a marine turtle sanctuary.
