The truck route freeway was the routing of I-5 prior to the newer interchange built in the 1970s (and rebuilt in 1994 after the Northridge quake destroyed portions of the 1970s part).
In between the two is San Fernando Road, which was the routing for US 99 (I-5's precursor) prior to the 1950s.The curvy road in the upper right of the aerial shot is Sierra Highway, which was once US 6, California 14's precursor.

It was upgraded to full freeway by the 1990s, and the most significant bottleneck along the route is the cloverleaf interchange between Interstate 215, California 60, and California 91 in Riverside.
Interstate 15 avoids the larger cities of Riverside and San Bernardino, and it is the faster through route to points north of the Inland Empire, such as Barstow and Las Vegas (see next photo box).
Upon exiting the canyon, Interstate 15 enters the Inland Empire, which is generally considered to be all the communities within the basin from Corona in the south to San Bernardino in the north and west to Chino Hills/Pomona and east to Moreno Valley.
