In 1810, San Diego River water held by the dam was flowing in tile lined conduits from the upper end of Mission Gorge to the valley lands in the vicinity of the San Diego Mission six miles away.
Later in the autumn of 1945, the Navy and the city of San Diego agreed to continue construction of the aqueduct by the Navy and lease of the pipeline to the city.
In the mid-1980s, San Diego was filled with talk of building a dam on the north end of the county and of a deal with a private firm to lease nearly 300,000 acre-feet from a reservoir on the Yampa River in Colorado.

The San Diego River Park concept is an ambitious undertaking that will establish a linear River Park along the urban and rural sections of the San Diego River from the Pacific Ocean to the river's headwaters near Julian, California.
Preserving lands along the San Diego River Valley will provide an important link in the coastal greenbelt and habitat preserve for San Diego, linking the cities of San Diego and Santee to the west and their regional open space preserve to the rural open space in the county to the east.
Lakeside's River Park Conservancy was formed on the heels of this rezoning process using the momentum of community beautification and awareness of the area's natural and scenic resources, not to mention the opportunity to revitalize the area.

The San Diego Lifeguard Service established it's river rescue team in 1978 to respond to emergencies created by flooding.

San Diego Trout is actively pursuing its dinosaur hunt--by attempting to locate native San Diego Coastal Rainbow Trout (those not polluted by hatchery genes in any way)--by searching for stranded populations of "pure strain" fish.
