The road as far as the unprepossessing town of San Fernando had been excellent, but on crossing the Apure River into Apure state it deteriorated rapidly, although some sections were still fine, and all of it was in better condition than I had expected.
Just south of San Fernando there were kilometres and kilometres of emerald green rice paddies, but that soon gave way to dry, open savannah grassland, now completely flat as far as the eye could see in all directions.
Hundreds of rivers cross the Bajo Llanos of Apure draining the Venezuelan Andes into the Orinoco basin, and narrow bands of lush forest line their courses, so that often a line of trees on the horizon marking the next river crossing was the only break in the monotony of the vast plains.

A day on the river -- with pictures! - Denniblog - BootsnAll Travelogues
San Fernando de Apure, in central Venezuela, was our haven between trips down the Apure and across the Orinoco looking for river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis).
While we were waiting to arrange for a dug-out to take on a longer trip, we paddled around the local tributaries in a small aluminium canoe, pulling up on banks or drifting slowly down the current; studying the dolphins within easy reach of San Fernando's urban comforts.
It was a calm day and we were drifting slowly, almost stationary, on a side-arm of the Apurito tributary which had widened across a shallow plain, almost forming a lake.

Parts of Los Llanos are accessible by paved roads from Barinas and San Fernando de Apure, others by dirt road only, for which a four-wheel drive is necessary.
It is better to visit the lowland plains during the dry season, as extensive flooding in the wet season restricts access to much of the plains, and less wildlife is visible.
