After close to fifty years at 19th Avenue and Ortega Street, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music announced in early 2000 that it plans to move to the International Center in the city's Civic Center area.
"The Conservatory of Music was founded in 1917 by Ada Clement and Lillian Hodghead as the Ada Clement Piano School.
One of the purposes of this expansion was to allow the San Francisco Symphony, Opera, and Ballet orchestra members to teach at the Conservatory, so that Conservatory students might have an increased opportunity to join those orchestras.

The San Francisco Tape Music Center (SFTMC) is important not only because of the composers who worked there but because its history is emblematic of the dilemmas faced by devotees of electronic music in the early 1960s.

He was invited to present a master class and perform in a recital with his former student, Nora King, presently a senior BM in Trumpet Performance major at the conservatory.

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music, which long ago outgrew its facilities at 19th Avenue and Ortega, expects to close Monday on the purchase of a new home in the Civic Center area.
The changeover at the International Center is expected to have a particular impact on the San Francisco Dance Center, the Lines-affiliated school that runs approximately 400 classes a month in five dance studios.
Founded in 1917, the conservatory is among the top-ranked music schools in the nation.
