Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 7 in E minor, San Francisco Symphony Review By John Shinners
As has been the case with the other symphonies in this cycle, he excels at judging the tempo and balance of the quieter moments, such as the hushed string interlude that falls over the movement just before the recapitulation of the opening horn theme.
Like the other works in the San Francisco's Mahler survey, this is a live recording but there is not the faintest hint of audience noise.
As with so many of the recordings that precede it, this account of the Seventh is one to treasure; it demonstrates once again that Tilson Thomas and his San Francisco players are bred in the bone to play Mahler.

SACD Review: San Francisco Symphony (Tilson Thomas) - ‘Mahler: Symphony No.4’
San Francisco concertmaster Alexander Barantschik’s violin solo rivals or even surpasses the sharply characterized solo that Cleveland Orchestra concertmaster William Preucil offered in Pierre Boulez’s otherwise poker-faced version on Deutsche Grammophon.
The concentration of the San Francisco players is astonishing, for the whole movement seems to unfold in a breath, nowhere hinting at the actual amount of time it is taking to unfold.
Additionally, her reading of the dotted note rhythm in the main theme is very literal, not matching the sprung rhythms that the San Francisco players use, which makes the theme plod instead of lilt.

In the future, audiophiles can look forward to releases of the remaining symphonies in the series: the Adagio from the unfinished Symphony 10 (awaiting its coupling, a replacement for a performance of the Rückert Lieder with the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, canceled due to her advancing illness), and the glorious Symphony No. 8.
Given the symphony's checkered history with recording Mahler soloists—in addition to the Hunt Lieberson disappointment, Michelle de Young replaced Nathalie Stutzmann in the Kindertotenlieder due to the intervention of 9/11—the soloists for these recordings have yet to be announced.
