The goal was to recreate the area with native grasses and low-growing shrubs that once flourished along the river channel to give the appearance of a meadow surrounded by colorful plants.
Cities up and down the channel, the San Gabriel Rivers and Mountains Conservancy, and other non-profit agencies are turning to the former “waste” land along the riverbank to restore these pockets of open space to the communities that surround them.
Lakewood’s West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail project is the first to use state grant money through the conservancy, which makes the city’s project a model for other open space landscaping on the river’s banks.

The route down the Los Angeles River will be on the east levee and there will be at least two parks with easy access from the bike path that have drinking fountains to replenish your water bottles.

There were 7-10 river crossings, and some sketchy climbing with 300 foot drops past the bridge.

I rode this on December 24th 2001 and was amazed that I had pretty much the whole place to myself.Think about it: 10 million people living in LA County and I can ride for 30 miles and see maybe 5 people, all clustered near the very start of the ride.
At the top of the last reservoir (San Gabriel Reservoir) there's a turning to the right which goes to East Fork.
It's a smooth paved road with no traffic and it follows along the west fork of the San Gabriel River very gently climbing.

Successful bond issues in 1917 and 1924 financed construction of 14 dams which were built to impound San Gabriel Mountain storm waters until they could be released in a controlled manner.
Two of these dams, now known as Cogswell and San Gabriel, were built in San Gabriel Canyon in 1934 and 1939, respectively, and a third dam, known as Morris Dam was constructed in 1934 by the City of Pasadena.

Follow the river up to Prairie Fork, climb Pine Mountain ridge (detouring into upper Fish Fork to replenish your water supply one last time), head over Mt. Baldy, and take San Antonio Ridge over to Iron Mountain, then finally descend back to the trailhead.
I guess the Forest Service had strung up half-inch cables at all the river crossings, but we didn't make it too far because we didn't have proper gear so we were going hand-over-hand over the roaring torrent(!!) I would love to see the Narrows during flood, but I'm not sure how to get there.

It use to be a Naval base and would test torpedos at the bottom and that is what that big concrete thing on the first lake is (some where between 1950-1985) in 98 the naval lease was up and the city of azusa and the county took back contorl.
