San Gabriel Valley - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California.
It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire.
The remaining white population in the San Gabriel Valley resides primarily in the communities of Pasadena, Glendora, Sierra Madre, Charter Oak, and in the northern part of Covina (the southern part is increasingly Hispanic).

The San Gabriel is the river that L.A. tamed, plundered and forgot.

The Rivers and Mountains Conservancy, which focuses on the San Gabriel and the lower L.A. River, is buying property along the San Gabriel, envisioning riparian greenbelts teeming with the terns and egrets that flock to the river's wet patches.

 Interstate 605 California @ Interstate-Guide.com
Interstate 605, the San Gabriel River Freeway, is a well-traveled route serving north-south traffic in the communities east of the city of Los Angeles.
This freeway is best known for its non-identity: all overhead signs for Interstate 605 are devoid of control cities and read "Thru Traffic," even though it serves many cities on its route between Interstate 405 in Long Beach and Interstate 210 in Duarte.
For this short distance, Interstate 605 is a narrow freeway that does not meet Interstate standards; it may be better to characterize this section as an extended on-ramp to Interstate 605.

Norwalk is a place of great freeway controversy, first because they were instrumental in ensuring that Interstate 105, the Century Freeway, would not continue very far east of Interstate 605 (San Gabriel River freeway).
California 42 was decommissioned after the Interstate 105 freeway was complete, but several shields remain, including most of the freeway interchanges (Interstate 5, Interstate 405, and Interstate 110 each have at least one California 42 shield on their signs approaching the exit leading to Former California 42).
This kind of sign provides the name of the road, river, or railroad that is being traversed; the route number; the bridge number; and the county postmile marker number.

Other freeway proposals are on the official California state highway map as proposed corridors (such as the California 14 southerly extension, California 64, California 90 parallel to Slauson Avenue, and others), but none of this are likely for construction anytime soon.
The City of Norwalk considered the freeway to be divisive, and many would argue that the effectiveness of Interstate 105 as a primary east-west freeway was undercut by Norwalk's action to keep the freeway from crossing its boundaries.
This is the last freeway to freeway interchange for westbound Interstate 105, and the freeway continues for another mile or so past this point before reaching its end at California Street.

 California @ WestCoastRoads - Interstate 210 - Westbound from California 57 to Interstate 5
After the merge of California 210/Foothill Freeway and California 57/Orange Freeway into westbound Interstate 210, the first three exits along the Interstate highway are: Exit 43, Sunflower Avenue; Exit 42, Grand Avenue; and Exit 41, Citrus Avenue.
The reason for this is because California 164 was originally planned to be a freeway (Rio Hondo Freeway) that would start at Interstate 605 east of Pico Rivera and southwest of Whittier, then continue north over the San Gabriel River, then joining Rosemead Boulevard in northern Pico Rivera.
And finally, from Interstate 210 north to California 138, California 2 is a two-lane, rural highway that serves the Angeles National Forest in the San Gabriel Mountains.

On Saturday, the Watershed Conservation Authority will hold a meeting for people who live near the property between the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway and the San Gabriel River to give their input about three different designs proposed for the future park.
Officials said the duck farm project, divided into 12 acres on the east side of the freeway and 45 acres on the west, gives a unique opportunity to provide open space and recreation areas to a densely urbanized area.
Simpson said the three alternative plans, drafted after the conservation authority's first public meeting held in April, include different arrangements with additions of wetlands and gardens, creations of vista points and a visitors' center, and the addition of trails and bridges.
