San Gavinu di Carbini is a huge commune that extends from the plains to the mountains, where San Gavinu (the administrative centre) and the hamlets of Varadicciu (Gualdariccio), Giddu (Giglio), Sapara Maio are to be found in a forest environment made up of holm oaks and chestnut trees.
Between San Gavinu di Carbini and Paccionitoli (Zonza commune), north of the D67 road on the PIANU DI I STANTARI, there are several remnants of menhir alignments.
To the north of San Gavinu di Carbini, the prehistoric site of Casteddu Saliseu, sometimes pronounced "Sadisè", was used by the lords of Biancolacci to fortify their position towards the year 1000 and until the 14th century.

Freight and Salvage: Tenores San Gavino
The Tenores San Gavino from the Italian island of Sardinia are among the premier performers of the fascinating male polyphonic singing style known as canto a tenore.
Striking in its strong, primordial sound, the canto a tenore features four voices, a leader or bogue who sings the main melody and three others providing complex melodic embellishment and rhythmic accompaniment characterized by nonsense syllables, guttural tones, and unusual harmonies to create a unique and instantly recognizable vocal form.
Continuing a tradition that is still very much alive in Sardinia, the Tenores San Gavino -- brothers Francesco, Giovanni, and Carmelo Pirisi, and bassu (bass) Raimondo Pidia -- have been performing since the '70s at grape harvests, feasts, and weddings around their home town of Oniferi.

Saint Gavino Cathedral, the biggest sardinian church and one of the most beautiful and significative example of the Romanesque – Pisan style, is situated about 100 metres from our hotel.
Saint Gavino’s Cathedral was built in the early middle ages, in the year 1111, and part of its fame it’s due to an original architectonical structure which presents, unique in Italy, two apses at the extremities of the church and one of them replaces the façade.
Inside the Cathedral are guarded the mortal remains of the martyrs Gavino, Proto and Gianuario, patron and saints of our town.

The same is true of the Cathedral of San Pietro di Sorres, one of the most beautiful monuments of Christian art, which was built of volcanic material taken from a nearby area by the inhabitants of another lost city, Sorra.
Two other testaments to faith are the big basilicas dedicated to Sardinian martyrs; the basilica of San Simplicio in Olbia and the basilica of San Gavino in Porto Torres, which are well worth visiting.

 Oniferi Tenores
The vibrations and timbres produced by flocks of sheep are what seems to especially inspire the marked guttural quality specific to this singing: a primeval element that develops into beauty of rare device, a melange of melismata, complex rhythms, and exciting modulations.
The Oniferi Tenores of San Gavino (the brothers Francesco, Giovanni, and Carmelo Pirisi: boche, contra, and mesu boche, and Raimondo Pidia, bassu) bring out some of the best tenore singing there is: they are indeed recognized as authoritative.
They’ve been working together for some twenty years, all the while developing refined timbres, such as never allow the tone and quality of sound to be smothered by sheer sound power, where the sole concern is volume and acoustic impact.

 Tenore 'San Gavino' de Oniferi
Tenore 'San Gavino' de Oniferi - who have now added the patron Saint of their village to their name - certainly deserve a widely distributed and top quality record to show the world their greatness.
I first encountered it on that essential CD of Sardinian singing, Polyphonies de Sardaigne (Chant du Monde LDX 274760), recorded by Bernard Lortat-Jacob in the late '70s and early '80s and I really do feel that this 'San Gavino' group is the first I've heard to equal those benchmark performances.
I urgently recommend this record to anyone with an interest in Sardinian music - and to anyone else with a fascination for the wonderful things that four human voices can do together.
