San Giovanni in Laterano, Italy. Travel guide & tourist information by Hostelbookers.com
Officially Rome's cathedral and the seat of the pope as bishop of Rome, the basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano (daily: summer 7am–7pm; winter 7am–6pm) was for centuries the main papal residence.
However, when the papacy returned from Avignon at the end of the fourteenth century, the Lateran palaces were in ruin and uninhabitable, and the pope moved across town to the Vatican, where he has remained ever since.
At the top, the chapel of San Lorenzo holds an ancient (sixth- or seventh-century) painting of Christ said to be the work of an angel, hence its name – acheiropoeton, or "not done by human hands".
