SAN BRUNO--Your recent editorial is a thoughtful appraisal of Amtrak and makes good points, but a couple of errors need clearing up.
The San Joaquins, serving the Central Valley from Sacramento and the Bay Area to Bakersfield, do not extend to San Diego.
The Coasters, between San Diego and San Luis Obispo, are separately administered and funded, although they're also contract-operated by Amtrak (they're currently California's fastest trains, hitting 90 mph).

 Amtrak San Joaquins
The San Joaquin Trains always seemed like the odd-man-out to me. The southern end of the line seems to end in the middle of nowhere in Bakersfield.
My guess is that it would take the San Joaquin train 4 to 6 hours to cover that route and no cities of significant size would be served in between.
I think the only reason that two of the San Joaquins actually make it all the way to the Oakland station is because they have to go through the station to park in the yard for the night anyway.

Not for all San Joaquins, just for #718 and 711, so that customers don't have to arrive in Los Angeles by bus at the absurd hour of 2:35 a.m., or leave at the equally absurd hour of 1:35 a.m.
I would expect that, knowing there are six pair of San Joaquins, that the cost of meaningful capacity improvements will exceed $300 million.

 Long Distance Bias - RAILforum
The long distance trains are grrreeeat and I hope every one of them stay around forever, but remember that its trains like the Pacific Surfliners, Northeast Corridors, Capitols, and San Joaquin Joaquins that are the staple of the passenger rail system.
On my 1999 trip, I rode the San Joaquin from Stockton to B'field, and the only problem was the door at the front of my car (just ahead of the upper-level table I was sitting at) had some kind of problem, and had to be wired open the whole trip -- awful NOISY!!!!!!
That 11:10a departure, if I'm not mistaken, becomes the 3:10pm departure NB from San Diego that connects So Cal to the Chief in LA, or the 4:00pm dep that goes all the way to SBA and connects the late-birds to the Chief in Fullerton.
