SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro -- A Mangyan school that promotes an indigenous people's education has received the prestigious "Most Outstanding Literacy Program" award from the non-formal education division of the Department of Education.
The five-year-old Pamana Ka, located in Sitio Danlog in Occidental Mindoro, is a special school that dispenses an indigenous education rooted in the culture and heritage of the Mangyans, according to anthropologist Father Rod Salazar.
Salazar is the coordinator of the Mangyan Mission in Occidental Mindoro which helped facilitate the system of indigenous people's education in the province.

An Intensity 5 earthquake rocked the municipality of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, at 7:43 a.m.
Henry Penarubia, research specialist of the seismology division of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 was caused by movement at the southwest Mindoro collision zone.
The earthquake was felt at intensity 4 at Odiongan, Romblon, and at intensity 3 on Boracay Island.

SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro -- A group of Mangyan tribes in Occidental Mindoro province refused at first to be interviewed for fear of being inaccurately portrayed again by the media.
For that, the 12-year-old organization of Buhid Mangyan residents in San Jose and Rizal towns, sent a handwritten letter in Filipino dated Sept. 4, 2002 to the TV program, expressing its protest to what it called a bad portrayal of its culture.
It identified one of the interviewees as Ricardo Peñaflor, of Barangay Batasan, San Jose, who has an adopted two-year-old child named Rica May. The child's biological parents are Mangyan.

San Jose, Mindoro Airport, i.e., the former Mcguire Strip about a mile from where Richard Stier crashed.
Stier had been flying as element leader in a four plane P-38 formation that was on an orientation flight for two newcomer pilots, 2nd Lt.'s Donald Henderson (the number two plane in the flight) and William Kleist, who as Lt. Stier's "wing" was the number four plane in the flight.

Although there are about seven different ethnic groups living in Mindoro, collectively called the Mangyans, these groups are quite distinct from each other as to language, customs, and way of living.
Only the ethnic group living in the south of Mindoro, roughly comprising the areas within the municipalities of Bulalacao (San Pedro), Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro and San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, claims the name Mangyan as the descriptive title of their tribe.

point of entry to occidental mindoro can be by air or sea then land.
there are buses available on the pier that will travel the length of the province in 6 hours, on alternating rough and cemented highway, from abra de ilog to san jose.
