The San Lorenzo River drains a watershed of approximately 138 square miles, and drops from an elevation of 2900 ft. to sea level in its 22 mile length.
Fishing in the San Lorenzo had been incredibly popular until the 1960's, and trout and salmon were routinely caught in the city and in the San Lorenzo Valley.
In contrast, the river contained by the high levees was barren of most wildlife, the fish populations declined, and the levees separated the two sides of town visually as well.

The absence of coho salmon bones in the middens south of San Francisco Bay plus the presence of coho salmon bones to the north (and steelhead bones both north and south) is good evidence that supports a scientific hypothesis that coho salmon did not occur in streams south of San Francisco Bay.
Coho salmon populations were not found south of San Francisco prior to hatchery fry stockings beginning in 1906 when 50,000 silver (coho) salmon eggs were taken by the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries in Washington State and sent to the Brookdale Hatchery on the San Lorenzo River in 1906.
The San Lorenzo River was stocked with 577,440 coho salmon from 1915-1941, and an unknown number from 1957 to 1993 (ibid).

The San Lorenzo River levee-raising project continues even as the Army Corps of Engineers probes allegations that critical tests have been faked to cover up shoddy work.
The allegations were made by two former employees of Zerimar Corp., the San Jose construction firm acting as general contractor on the project.
The two-year effort involves raising levees along the river in downtown Santa Cruz, installing pipes to catch and divert storm water runoff and planting the banks with trees and other foliage.

We started at the Redwood grove, hooked up with the river trail at some point before hitting the pipeline road for 1+ miles.
The Buckeye trail going toward the river was rather steep with lots of switchbacks.
Next time, we’ll be floating down the river in a tubing of some sort.
