San Luis Potosi : Introduction Frommers.com
San Luis Potosí, more than a mile high in central Mexico's high-plains region, was among the country's most picturesque and prosperous mining cities.
Capital of the state of the same name, San Luis Potosí was named for Louis IX, saintly king of France; Potosí, the Quechua word for richness, was borrowed from the incredibly rich Bolivian Potosí mines, which San Luis's mines were thought to rival.
It is now the largest and most industrial of the silver cities, with more than a half-million inhabitants, but you would never know it if you stayed in the historic central district.
