The province of San Luis, situated in the geographic center of Argentina, is bounded by La Rioja on the north; Córdoba on the northeast; La Pampa on the east and the southeast; of Mendoza on the west and southwest; and San Juan on the northwest.
San Luis has an area of 76,748 square kilometers (2% of the country total) of which, some 4,000 are occupied by the sierras called Pampean (with lower altitudes than those in the neighboring provinces), located mostly in the northern half of the province.

Less than a year after Rodriguez Saa took office with 90 percent of the vote, a large part of San Luis is demanding that the federal government intervene in the province.

The San Luis province government yesterday announced it will ask the Supreme Court to fix the terms for the refund of a multimillion-dollar term deposit it placed with the state-owned Banco Nación bank, which was frozen and pesified by the federal government — along with all other bank deposits — early in 2002.
In a March verdict, the Supreme Court overruled the pesification of the San Luis government funds and gave the parties 60 days to agree on repayment terms.
San Luis province Economy Minister Claudio Poggi told reporters that provincial authorities had met with Banco Nación representatives four times during the 60-day period — which expired yesterday — but consistently failed to reach an agreement.
