		San Saba, the county seat of San Saba County, is on U.S. Highway 190 eighty-seven miles northwest of Austin in eastern San Saba County.
		Industry in San Saba remained based on the agricultural economy of the surrounding area, which changed to reflect the post-World War II concentration on the cultivation of wheat, pecans, peanuts, fruit, and grain sorghum, and on cattle, sheep, and goat ranching.
		In 1990 the population of San Saba was 2,626.

		San Saba County (H-14, H-15) is in Central Texas in the Llano Basin region.
		The earliest known record of Anglo-Americans in San Saba County was in December 1828, when a group of twenty-eight citizens from Austin's colony at Gonzales traveled through the eastern area of the county on their way to recapture a band of horses.
		San Saba County's population declined to 8,666 by 1950 and to 5,540 by 1970.

	Mission San Sabá
		Four miles upstream, the 30 soldiers at the Presidio San Sabá heard the terrible din, saw the smoke from the fires, and were soon surrounded themselves.
		Presidio San Sabá was strengthened and manned for another decade because of its strategic role in Spanish mining operations nearby, but then it, too, was abandoned as the Spanish frontier retreated southward.
		Though the artist was never in central Texas, he was advised by eyewitnesses as to the appearance of the mission and the details of the Indian attack.
