Three Principles of the People (anthem)
"San Min Chu-i" (三民主義 in pinyin: Sān Mín Zhǔyì), translated "Three Principles of the People", is the national anthem of the Republic of China on Taiwan.
"San Min Chu-i" was chosen as the world's best national anthem at the 1936 Summer Olympics.
In this respect, "San Min Chu-i" stands in contrast to the People's Republic of China's "The March of the Volunteers", which is written a few years later in modern vernacular Chinese entirely.

The text debuted on July 16, 1924 as the opening of a speech by Sun Yat-sen at the opening ceremony of the Whampoa Military Academy.
On June 3, 1937, the Central Standing Committee (中央常務委員會) approved the proposal, and in 1943, "San Min Chu-i" officially became the national anthem of the Republic of China.
The Democratic Progressive Party has accepted the "San Min Chu-i" but often plays it in a strongly Taiwanese context such as having it sung by a choir of Taiwanese aboriginals or in Taiwanese or Hakka.

The first principle, min-tsu chu-i, or nationalism, earlier had meant opposition to the Ch'ing (Manchu) dynasty and to foreign imperialism; now Sun explained the phrase as denoting self-determination for the Chinese people as a whole and also for the minority groups within China.
The second principle, min-ch'üan chu-i, or the "rights of the people," sometimes translated as "democracy," could be achieved, Sun explained, by allowing the Chinese people to control their own government through such devices as election, initiative, referendum, and recall.
The last principle was min-sheng chu-i, or "people's livelihood," which is often translated as "socialism." This is the most vague of the three proposals, but by it Sun seemed to have in mind the idea of equalization of land ownership through a just system of taxation.

From 1895, when he fled China after an unsuccessful uprising, until late 1911, when he was elected the provisional president of the Republic, Sun Yat-sen visited Chinese communities in Europe and the United States, including the one in Los Angeles in 1910, appealing for financial and political support.
While in Europe in 1897, he proclaimed the San Min Chu I, Three Principles of the People--Nationalism, Democracy and Livihood, which became the fundamental principles of the republic.
