Sancerre is a town and commune of the Cher département, in central France.
It is a medieval hilltop town overlooking the Loire River in the former province of Berry.
Sancerre was also the site of the infamous Siege of Sancerre (1572-1573) during the Wars of Religion where the Huguenot population held out for nearly eight months against the Catholic forces of the king.

The Sancerre appellation is characterized by three soil types: the "caillottes," pebbly chalk and limestone soils; the "terres blanches," chalky clay and marl soils; and the "argilo-calcaire," limestone, clay and silaceous sandy soils.
Acidity is an essential element to the character of Sancerre, and in summers of insufficient sunlight to fully ripen the grapes, their elevated acidity requires a degree of malolactic fermentation.
Michel Redde Sancerre shows the aromatic herb and spice fragrance of the Sauvignon Blanc grape which is confirmed on the palate with bracing, crisp white fruit flavors supported by a nervy acidity.

White wines from Sancerre and its neighboring Loire River town of Pouilly, which gives us Pouilly Fume, have grown so popular that it is unusual to find a bottle from either for less than $20.
Their appeal comes from a lively combination of minerality and zestiness derived from the sauvignon blanc grape grown on the region's limestone soil.
But while Sancerre and Pouilly received governmental recognition (appellation contrôlée) for their wines in 1936 and 1937, respectively, it wasn't until 1959 that Menetou-Salon received that accolade.

Fruit for this 100% pinot noir-based pink comes from the same Crochet holdings that are used for their two cuvees of Sancerre Rouge, the Clos du Roy and the Cote de Bue.
