Sanchin is generally believed to be the oldest kata in existence.
Taught by Taishi Daruma at the Shaolin temple, Sanchin is a simple pattern with complex breathing and focus that emphasizes the three precepts of the kata: breathing, physical concentration, and mental concentration.
Sanchin is often viewed as the very foundation of the martial arts, as it employs the three original techniques mind, body, and spirit.

 Sanchin
This is achieved by the instructor pushing and slapping (thighs and shoulders) different parts of the body as a way of assisting the student in keeping their body tight, rooting stances, performing correct body posture and focusing their mind.
This type of Sanchin training is known in China as “Iron Shirt Qigong” and is used to extend the Qi (chi) energy to the skin thus making the practitioner impervious to wounds.

I think this gentleman is accurately describing Sanchin as he has seen it performed and as he was taught how to do it.
There are exceptions to this in the Uechi system; any pushing movements would benefit from doing an exhale with the movement as there is resistance to the movement in much the same way as there is resistance to muscles in a bench press.
Goju Sanchin was designed to give us the ability to practice a tremendous dynamic range of resistance motions, and to learn how to correctly titrate the breathing resistance.

In fact, I think most westerners haven't got a clue about what Sanchin is. I didn't really put it together until *after* I had a lot of experience in Chinese martial training exercises and until *after* (by accident) I happened to see an old video of the Uechi founder's son doing the kata....
The point is that Sanchin is a body conditioning exercise, not really a "here's a nifty set of martial moves" type kata.
"Sanchin" is, at heart", a method of training the body around the 3 contradictions that are the famous six-directions of training.

As goes for Sanchin, my Sensei does not test with a straight leg groin kick to see if your knees are together enough.
In Uechi we generally keep a pretty wide Sanchin, a little wider than the shoulders, so it is not really possible to keep the knees that together anyway.
My Sensei does test our arms in sanchin, he punches to the stomach and chest, low kicks to thighs and calfs, high roundhouse or punches to the lat, double strike to the traps (neck), and he often stands on the calf of our back foot at the end.
