He was the son of Ramiro I of Aragon and Ermesinde of Bigorre, and he succeeded his father Ramiro in 1063.
Sancho V conquered Barbastro in 1065, Graus in 1083, and Monzon in 1089.

In Aragon, Alfonso's brother Ramiro became king; in Navarre, Garcia Ramirez, a grandson of Sancho the Great, who was obliged to surrender Rioja to Castile in 1136, and Taragona to Aragon in 1157, and to declare himself a vassal of King Alfonso VII of Castile.
The greatest glory of Sancho el Fuerte was the part he took in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), where, through his valour, the victory of the Christians over the Calif En-Nasir was made decisive.

In 1275 his elder brother, Fernando de la Cerda, was killed, leaving a son, Alfonso de la Cerda, heir to Alfonso X. Sancho, supported by the nobles and the military orders, sought recognition as heir instead of his nephew and took up arms against the king.
Sancho finally removed this threat by arranging a marriage (1291) between his eldest daughter, Isabel, and James II of Aragon.
Sancho owed much to his ablest supporter, Lope Díaz de Haro, whom he killed in anger during an argument at Alfaro (1288).
