king of Aragon from 1063 to 1094 and of Pamplona (or Navarre; as Sancho V Ramírez) from 1076 to 1094, the son of Ramiro I of Aragon.
After the murder of Sancho IV of Navarre, Sancho Ramírez, with Navarrese consent, became king of Navarre, forestalling the ambition of Alfonso VI of Castile to annex that kingdom.
The son of Sancho Ramírez, the third in order of the historic kings of Aragon, Peter belonged to times anterior to the authentic written history of his kingdom; and little is known of him save that he conquered Huesca (1096) and Barbastro (1100) from the Moors of Saragossa.

The monastery held under its jurisdiction fifty-eight towns and seventy-two religious houses, and was besides the mausoleum of the Kings of Navarre.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Barbastro
It was taken by the Arabs, under the leadership of Muza (711), and the name Barbaschter given to it, from which the name Barbastrum, according to the generally accepted opinion, is derived.
It was held by the Saracens until about the year 1063, when it was retaken by Don Sancho Ramirez, King of Aragon.
The Arabs once more obtained possession, but Aremengol IV, Count of Urgel, reconquered it, and after a third Arab conquest it was restored to Spain, in 1101, by Pedro I, King of Aragon, who, with the pope's consent, constituted it an episcopal see, transferring the see from the ancient city of Roda to Barbastro.

Study II, continued: Fernando I and the Origins of the Leonese-Castilian Alliance with Cluny, Part Two
In 1068, in Rome, Sancho Ramirez places himself and his Jacan kingdom under the feudal suzerainty of St Peter; in 1077 Alfonso VI, confronting Gregory VII's claims to secular authority over the Hispanic Empire, follows his father Fernando in seeking confraternity with Cluny, while reviving the lapsed census in doubled amount.
We have suggested that the confusion in Kehr and Erdmann over the customary pensio derives from their failure to allow for Sancho Ramírez' transfer to Rome of various reales monasterios, until in 1088-1089 he pledges Urban II the census of 1000 mancusos, in apparent emulation of the Leonese-Castilian stipend to Cluny.
Behind the shift lies the confrontation of May 1063 at Graus, Sancho Ramírez' resort to papal intervention in Ribagorza as the alternative to his subordination to imperial domination, and the launching of the Franco-Catalan crusade against Ribagorza.
