Sanctuary Spa -- Recommendations and Resources   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A sanctuary is the consecrated (or sacred) area of a church or temple around its tabernacle or altar.
The band was dissolved in 1991, with pressures from Epic records to change their style from heavy metal to following the then popular, grunge scene.
The first platypus bred in captivity was born at the Sanctuary in 1943.

 Journal of Religion and Society
Sanctuary band and church members wanted their bands to reject the temptation to become "metal gods" or priests and the lifestyle that went with the vocation.
Sanctuary members, however, believed moshing could be accommodated because "if we say that moshing is wrong we've just alienated the group of moshers." In addition, they claimed that it was the motive and not the action that might make it wrong.
For example, although Sanctuary leaders formed the church in response to the corrupt practices of evangelical churches, Sanctuary leaders eventually realized that the heavy metal subculture was actually corrupting or limiting their own church practices.

BNR Metal Pages -- Sanctuary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Sanctuary gained notoriety by having Dave Mustaine produce their debut album (apparently the band met Dave backstage and simply handed them a demo, and Dave decided to produce their album).
The band's intricate, classy power metal, highlighted by Warrel Dane's outstanding vocals, was a breath of fresh air in the metal field.
Personal differences between some members led to the breakup of the band after two fine albums, prompting Dane and bassist Jim Sheppard to form the even better Nevermore, and they have prospered ever since.

 J. Geils Band : Sanctuary - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Hot on the heels of the band's excellent but completely overlooked Monkey Island, the J. Geils Band severed ties with Atlantic and signed a fresh deal with EMI Records.
However, Sanctuary was a rebirth of sorts for the sextet: Wissert crystallized the band's attack, working off their leaner songwriting and simplifying their arrangements.
Keeping their boogie-woogie bar band attack intact, Peter Wolf and Seth Justman delivered first-rate material, including the down and dirty opener "I Could Hurt You," the sublime title track and the lovely "One Last Kiss," which cracked the Top 40 in early 1978.

Anyway, I was really listening, I mean REALLY listening to the song "she sells sanctuary" and just thinking how cool the song title was, you know...one of those things that hits you and stays with you for about 4 hours and you can't seem to think of anything else other than that little "thing".
This is when sad day sanctuary popped into my head...Im not sure if I ripped off the title or not, or if I'm even just in naming a band after a Cult song.
I have been lucky enough to be blessed with a number of very good friends in my life, ones who share common interests and accept me for the total odd ball I can be, so I figured..."well..enough of my friends like music and can at least KIND of play an instrument".

 Deep Listening Band - Sanctuary
Sanctuary was recorded in the beautiful acoustics of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Kingston, New York.
In addition, the Deep Listening Band also utilizes their newly developed Expanded Instrument System -- a digital electronic processing environment that allows the musicians full control over many spatial and acoustical parameters.
The core Deep Listening Band: Pauline Oliveros (just-tuned accordion), Stuart Dempster (trombones, didjeridu) and David Gamper (pipe organ, flutes) are augmented here by a "Deep Listening Big Band" including new music vocalists Tom Buckner and Julie Lyon Balliet, Joe McPhee on bass-clarinet and pocket trumpet, and percussionists Nego Gato and Women Who Drum.

Sanctuary band leader and music ministry team's blog.
To our teens (who do double duty, and God bless them for their dedication!) the youth band is first priority.  But to our senior leadership (pastor and music/associate pastor) the sanctuary band is first priority.
Of course the obvious solution is not to have anyone play in both bands.  But that hasn't proven realistic in our worship department.  The teens make up half of our band.  The sound, and the things we are able to do with them, would suffer without them.
