Long aware of the great sand hills range and of the Ogallala aquifer, Youngscap searched this unique area for several years looking for property with land forms that might yield holes of high golfing quality.
As Youngscap notes, 'Not all sand hills are created equally' and the particular parcel of land that was eventually settled upon was brought to Youngscap's attention because of its poor grazing qualities: the sandy soil lacked humus and thus much vegetation, requiring 25 acres to support each cattle.
The Lodging Information booklet points out that because of the excellent sand particles, the cost per Sand Hills green was $300 as neither drain tile/gravel under the greens nor special greens mix were required.

 Seeing The Light - Sand Hills Lighthouse
In its 1892 annual report, the Lighthouse Board noted that traffic patterns on the lake had changed, and that eastbound vessels were making a turn off Sand Hills, some twelve miles to the west of Eagle River, and approximately midway between the coast lights of Ontonagon and Eagle Harbor.
The plans for the Sand Hills lighthouse were some of the most ambitious ever proposed for a light station, and called for a combined yellow brick light tower and triple dwelling, with the 70-foot tall tower centered in the building.
The stationed was decommissioned and the Sand Hills name was forever removed from the official listings of aids to navigation.

The boundary of the Sand Hills is taken from Omernik (1995) and is very similar to the boundary described in Bailey unit 332C-Nebraska Sand Hills and Küchler (1985) unit 67 (Sand Hills Prairie).
