Sand Lake is 124-acres in size and is located in the northwestern part of Otter Tail County.
Sand Lake is susceptible to winterkill during severe winters and most recently experienced a partial winterkill during the winter of 1996-1997.
The establishment of fish populations in Sand Lake is dependent on the frequency of winterkill.

Actually, Sand Lake was an Ellis County "Landmark Bonaza." Many of the original buildings were still standing in what appeared to have been the central section of a village.
Later the name was changed to T. and N. There is reason to believe that the community of Sand Lake was established around the turn of the century but there are other clues which indicate the date might have been much earlier.
The highlight of a visit to Sand Lake in 1976 was a conversation with young Jerry Glaspy, one of the owners, who pointed out various landmarks.
