Take a Look at the Sand and Pitching Wedges | VK HowTo
The pitching wedge and the sand wedge can be used in the place of a chipping wedge, yet another in the family of wedges.
To use the sand wedge in the place of a pitching wedge, the ball should be fairly close to the green, say, within twenty five yards.
To use the pitching wedge to chip with is easier, as the club head on the pitching wedge is not as angled.

Although designed primarily for bunker play, the sand wedge is not always the right club to use from a trap.
Wet sand is heavy and tends to stick together, and if you're playing after a hard rain, the surface probably will be packed down and as hard as a car path.
If the sand is hard-packed so even the sharp edge of your pitching wedge will bounce up and "belly" the ball, play the shot as you would off hard dirt.

Fill the gap in your wedge collection - PGATOUR.COM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
As the name of the club implies, it would be a wedge that fills the "gap" between your pitching wedge, which probably bears a loft of 46 or 48 degrees, and your sand wedge, which most likely registers 56 degrees, and sometimes 58.
Your pitching wedge might be used, depending on your strength and ability, for approach shots from 100 to 140 yards out, while sand wedges might be used from, perhaps, 40 to 80 yards.
A gap wedge might serve you well for shots to the green from a broad range of 60 to 120 yards, as well as for some deft, lofted chips from around the green.

Great for short approach shots to the green, the 5008 will fill the distance gap when the pitching wedge is too much club and the sand wedge will not deliver enough distance from the fairway.
It works equally well in soft or firm sand bunkers, and is easy to play from all types of lies in and around the bunker.
The ideal use for this club would be to complement a 52° fairway wedge as a sand wedge, or complement a 54° sand wedge as a lob wedge.

Golfers should know how wedges work - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Gap wedge -- A very specialized wedge, this club has 51 to 54 degrees of loft and is supposed to fill the "gap" between the pitching and sand wedge -- for those "in between" shots.
Specialized golf wedges are attractive on the sales rack with their grooved faces, extra loft and added sense of security for shaky short games.
Bounce, or bounce angle, refers to the built-up area on the wedge's sole, which is meant to help the club "bounce" through the sand or grass.

Gap wedge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A gap wedge is a type of golf club used to hit a shot with higher and shorter trajectory than a pitching wedge.
This left a huge gap between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge, which is typically 54-58 degrees.
Such a wedge can be used as the "approach" wedge, or it can be laid open to scoop through sand to liberate a ball from a bunker as one would with a sand wedge.

Sports: Sackett - Who's afraid of the big, bad bunker?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Most amateurs are deathly afraid of hitting their ball in the sand and are subsequently poor bunker players for one reason - they do not know how they are supposed to play a bunker shot.
This is due to the fact that a Tour player understands the function of the sand wedge and, more importantly, how to properly execute a shot from the sand.
The sand wedge is the only iron where the trailing edge of the club's bottom enters the playing surface first.

If you are reasonably good out of the sand at your home course it is probably because you have found the right blend of technique and equipment for that type of sand texture.
If your home course has fluffy, soft sand then you probably have a sand wedge with a good wide flange on the bottom as well as some bounce.
You can also use a stronger lofted sand wedge(55 or 56 degrees) in soft sand because it is easy to open the face to create more loft.

A 52-degree gap wedge will come in handy if there's a large difference in loft between your pitching and sand wedges.
Wedge finishes can be chrome, darkened or raw, and the differences aren't just cosmetic.
Raw, unchromed wedges can produce more spin and softer feel than the rest.Clubfaces must comply with USGA Rules, so your texture choices are limited.

G.R.I.P. Golf Research in Play - discount wedges – sand wedge, utility, gap, women’s club
The Gap Wedge provides golfers with the ability to hit from longer distances similar to the Pitching Wedge but it has a higher ball flight and more spin like a Sand Wedge, which allows the ball to roll to a stop quickly on the green and enables more precise shot making.
The Gap Wedge is also referred to as a “Utility Wedge” or a “Tweenie.” Many golfers have replaced their Pitching Wedge with a Gap Wedge because they can use their 9 iron for 100+-yard, approach shots and prefer the Gap to the Pitching Wedge inside of 100 yards.
A Sand Wedge is a critical tool from not only the sand but also from the fairway and the rough.

During the course of a round, you may face plenty of shots into greens with pitching and sand wedges.
The extra loft and bounce on the sand wedge makes it less reliable on hard swings; the tendency is to overswing and mishit the ball.
Experiment with three-quarter swings with the sand and lob wedges and keep increasing your effort until reaching maximum distance.

 Lovett Wedge Review
The Lovett Wedge is available in two models; the Tour Standard (59 degrees loft) and the Tour Lob (63 degrees loft).
Out of the sand, we found that all better golfers had to do was just pick the club up and drop it down and the ball just popped out of the sand every time.
Out of the sand and rough, we found the design to minimize the amount of twisting that usually occurs with these types of lies.

Sand wedge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the name implies, a golfer uses a sand wedge to stroke a golf ball from a sand bunker, also known as a sand trap, bunker or hazard.
Designed in 1930 by Gene Sarazen the short-shafted sand wedge is often the heaviest of the 14 clubs, weighing nearly 40 ounces (1150 grams) with a typical loft angle of 54 to 56 degrees.
With the concave-faced wedge having been outlawed in 1931, Sarazen designed his sand wedge with a straight face.

The F2 Wedge may look unconventional, but as soon as you hit it, you'll know why it is the biggest jump in short game technology since the invention of the sand wedge!
Although the F2 wedge is marketed for all players, I wouldn't recommend this club for mid to low handicappers based on my same experience and playing conditions.
Plus most people already have a 56 degree club (most sand wedges are this degree of loft generally), so it would give you a club in between that and your pitching wedge.

From tight lies, I preferred the 256 wedge, due to the fact I bladed several with the 260 while hitting from tight fairway or closely mown chipping areas.

One of the reasons for poor results from firm or wet sand is the use of a sand wedge with too much bounce on the bottom of the club
Most sand wedges, with their different design, will tend to hit that firm sand and bounce up into the ball.
If you struggle with your wedges from both firm sand and firm fairways, you might want to consider a 3rd wedge for your bag, one with more loft than your pitching wedge, but with less bounce and narrower sole than your sand wedge.
