Manga was designed to be read in the anthology format and my hopes are that this will be the most appealing anthology out there.
If you're considering a manga, you have to look at it in terms of the magazine it was first published in, and the target audience they had in mind, and that can be some of the most interesting things to take into account.
To me, manga are similar to American newspaper strips from the '30s and '40s, their period of greatest popularity, the heyday of the adventure strip.

Sandland is about a land of, well, sand where both humans and demons live.
Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball both found their ways onto the boob tube and neither series lost one ounce of the signature action and humor that was present in the original print version (GT was a made for TV continuation of Dragon Ball Z, Toriyama did not write it).
From manga to anime, Akira Toriyama creates worlds that fans love, that we embrace and that live on long after they are concluded.

Akira Toriyama's Sandland justifies its cover price in a single panel: a giant Devil, clad in biker-style leather clothing, sitting on his enormous throne and reading Faust by the light of the infernal flame.
The heroes of this desperate country are a pink young demon named Beelzebub, the actual son of the Devil, his demon follower Thief and a quiet old sheriff carrying humanity's hopes for water and the future.
Sandland is an unexpectedly warm manga, and a reminder of why Toriyama is at the top of his profession.

I like getting people interested in manga who might not have been interested before, such as anime fans who might not necessarily be familiar with the original work, or in the case of BASTARD!!, RPG fans.
Manga are designed to be read in the weekly or monthly format, with cliffhangers and very gradual plot development, and my greatest hope is that the anthology magazine format will succeed in America as it has in Japan.
Later on, the plotlines which are developed in the early part of the story come to fruition as the series becomes a fighting manga, and Yusuke and his friends become supernatural fighters with their newly-found spiritual powers.

As a one volume manga, Sandland is given the unique advantage of being fast paced in its storytelling.

It publishes manga that I have zero interest in, while shunning the manga that I do have interest in.
And just for reference sake, Viz got the One Piece manga before 4Kids got their hands on the anime, so by that fact alone, your agument that Shounen Jump will only publish series already popular in America is rendered null and void.

There's also been no shortage of discussion among fans over the fact that manga is so widely accepted by fans in Japan and that it sells in record numbers there, leading many to wonder what the problem is with the American comic book sales model.
Ninja manga were considered passé and old-school in Japan for a long time, and Naruto, which started in 1999, has made the genre cool again for both male and female readers.
The average age of manga and anime fans has consistently gone down over the past ten years, and I think this is a good thing that shows a healthy trend towards the mainstream, just like the narrowing gender gap as more female fans get into manga.
