Best way out of litigation deep water is no-fault compensation - smh.com.au
The red-and-yellow flags are usually placed either side of a sandbar so that bathers will swim in the shallow area in between.
Sandbars, on the other hand, become a hazard only when people knowingly propel themselves towards the sand either by diving into shallow water (less than waist depth) or catching a dumping wave.
At Bondi Beach, sandbars are always present, sometimes attached to the beach, sometimes up to 50 metres offshore, and always with deeper rip channels flowing to either side.

WHOI : Oceanus : Shaping the Beach, One Wave at a Time
Given weather conditions (winds, offshore waves), a map (islands, canyons, shoals, sandbars, the slope of the beach face), and sediment characteristics, we want to be able to model and predict how waves might change, and how those changes might affect currents and the erosion or accretion of sand on the beaches.
Sandbars appear to protect beaches by causing increased breaking and dissipation of wave energy before the waves can attack the shoreline.
To test the sandbar hypothesis we used observations of waves and mean water levels collected at the Army Corps of Engineers’ Field Research Facility in Duck, N.C. We found that sandbars affect the coastal water levels and flooding during storms.

Seepage-Induced Slope Failures on Sandbars in Grand Canyon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The effect of fluctuating discharge from Glen Canyon Dam on downstream sandbars is of significant concern to dam operators, environmentalists, and the public.
In this contribution, the observations of seepage-related erosion caused by fluctuations in dam discharge are presented.
Field data from an instrumented sandbar in the Grand Canyon subjected to the fluctuating discharge from Glen Canyon Dam are compared with the predictions from the simple model, the finite-element model, and conventional slope-stability analyses.

 Glen Canyon Dam: Biology
As the years passed, the sandbars have been eroding because the river is unable to provide the strength and silt to move and create sandbars.
The sandbar volumes increased significantly (49%) which caused them to be higher, but the width was not significantly increased (Hazel, 1997).
The eroding sandbars were depositing the sand in eddies which caused eventual filling but the sandbars did not erode so much as to become smaller than before the flooding (Hazel, 1997).

Piping Plover   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The piping plover is an extremely rare bird that nests on the sandbars of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers.
The decline of the piping plover in the alkali wetlands is due to wetland drainage, contaminants, and cattle grazing.
Certain sandbars used by the birds are posted with signs that close these areas to human use during the nesting season.

 Sandbars and Beaches
Due to rising sea levels, waves have access to banks and cliffs, undercutting them and allowing sandy particles to be borne along and deposited at the mouths of creeks and coves.
Sandbars form and occasionally extend across the mouth of a creek, creating a secluded tidal pond.
Saltmarsh cordgrass, hightide bush, poison ivy, trumpet vine, wild fl cherry, fl locust, dwarf sumac, and persimmon are typical, and eastern redcedar often assumes dominant proportions.

When flows dropped during the summer, the sandbars were exposed and provided nesting and feeding areas for least terns and piping plovers.
Sparse vegetation, sandbars surrounded by water, and a wide river channel protected the birds from predators.
It would be impossible to restore the river completely to its historic state, so our goal is to combine natural and managed areas into smaller pockets of habitat that maintain their ecosystem function and meet the roosting needs of sandhill cranes and whooping cranes.

Bar (landform) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It therefore applies to a silt accumulation that shallows the entrance to or the course of a river or creek.
Bars that occur at or off the shoreline of a sea or a lake are related to beaches and might be considered offshore features of a beach (Bascom, 1980).
This bar forms (sometimes seaward of a trough) where the waves are breaking, because the breaking waves set up a shoreward current with a compensating counter-current along the bottom.

We do believe the Missouri River corridor in North Dakota, prior to dam construction, was not the principal nesting grounds for these birds because of the double spring rise in the rive, which impacted nesting on sandbars.

Grand Canyon Studies--Two Examples - USGS WCMG
Observers in the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River (see map) have noticed a gradual decline in the size and number of sandbars used as camping beaches by river runners and backpackers.
He and his team studied the internal structures of the sandbars as revealed in the cutbanks and in the walls of trenches--about 3 feet deep and up to 300 feet long--that they dug across selected sandbars.
Detailed descriptions of the sandbars' internal structures will help geologists recognize the remnants of such bars in rocks that formed millions of years ago, enabling them to more accurately reconstruct the geologic histories of ancient rivers.

 Observations of nearshore crescentic sandbars
The temporal and spatial variability of crescentic sandbars is analyzed with hourly long-term (months) video observations collected at four barred sites and are qualitatively compared to the temporal and spatial variability predicted by hypotheses underpinning existing approaches and models for crescentic bar formation (edge-wave template model, linear stability analysis, and nonlinear models).
Temporal changes in wavelength and amplitude result from merging and splitting of individual crescents, causing the “final” configuration of a crescentic sandbar system to be very different from the initial configuration.
The Gold Coast data indicate that these intrinsically nonlinear interactions are an attempt of the crescentic bar system to self-organize into a more uniform pattern, as splitting is usually confined to the longest crescentic bar observed, whereas merging usually combines the smallest crescentic bars into a longer bar.

Tampa Bay Estuary Program - Projects Seeks to Restore Lost Sandbars in the Bay   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Scientists hope that re-creating the sandbars will facilitate the recovery of underwater seagrasses vital to the bay’s health by buffering wave action that may be preventing seagrasses from growing.
Historical photos of the bay indicate sandbars once were prevalent along the shoreline in many areas, but have since disappeared.
Scientists speculate that these sandbars helped soften the impacts of waves, allowing seagrasses to flourish in the quiet, protected waters behind the sandbars.

One of the fascinating aspects of sandbars is the way that they illustrate succession.
Sand bars on a typical midwestern river such as the Wabash are likely to be colonized by dense growths of water-willow - a small herbaceous plant (no relation to willow-trees) that bears thin, willow-like leaves.
