Levin has taken the principled step of formally lending support to H.R., which would put an end to the practice of "extraordinary rendition." This is a practice in which Bush Administration officials send people into the custody of certain nations, knowing full well (some would say intending) that they will be tortured there.
Levin has taken the affirmative step of cosponsoring H.R., which would provide more information to the public about contacts between lobbyists and politicians, and which would slow down the revolving door of politics in which politicians move into cushy corporate jobs after they retire in exchange for favors.
Sander Levin has not yet cosponsored H.R., which would keep members of the Federal Communication Commission from using their appointed positions to censor cable, satellite or internet programs they consider to be indecent.

Levin, who described himself as "cautiously upbeat" regarding the future of US trade relations, voiced concern over the deteriorating relationship between the US and the European Union (EU), as transatlantic trade disputes in the World Trade Organisation are multiplying rapidly.
Levin recently met with EU representatives and said that the EU challenge of the US foreign sales corporation (FSC) tax program was designed primarily to gain leverage in response to the US economic sanctions in the WTO cases against the EU's beef and banana import regimes.
Levin expressed the view that this kind of retaliation may set a dangerous precedent and could lead to an escalation of transatlantic trade disputes.

Levin acknowledged in an interview with Inside U.S. Trade on May 3 that his staff did not fact check every finding in the IRLF reports but the analysis demonstrates a number of instances where the labor laws of the DR-CAFTA countries fall short of international standards which are supported by other reports.
Levin wanted to show that the labor provisions included in the free trade agreement the United States has negotiated with Central American countries and the Dominican Republic are inadequate.
Levin’s criticism this week was backed by Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), ranking member on the Senate Finance Committee’s international trade subcommittee, who told U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman in a May 4 letter to deal with the substance of the problems identified by the reports.

Levin and other opponents of the DR-CAFTA charged in a letter to USTR that these statements are a misrepresentation since the State Department and an ILO analysis have identified 20 specific areas where DR-CAFTA countries’ labor laws fall short of ILO standards.
