In 1991 Sandgate and Windsor-Zillmere merged, forming a new club, North Brisbane, which won a premiership in 1995.

Actually, the name "Sandgate" given to the town in the Charter was probably taken from a town in England.
Sandgate has been under three jurisdictions: the English, through its "Hampshire grant" of 1761; an independent State named "New Connecticut" at a convention held in Westminster January 15, 1777, which name on June 4, 1777 was changed to "Vermont"; and finally the State Constitution adopted at Windsor July 2-8, 1777.

Of all the original Sandgate Hurds who emigrated from Woodbury, Connecticut, and vicinity, only one, possibly a second, can be clearly identified as a descendant of John Hurd.
She married Reuben Hurd, son of Daniel 1st, bore seven children, died in 1889, and is buried in Sandgate Center Cemetery.
A son George, who married Elizabeth Ann Woodard in Sandgate, 1796, son Nathan and daughter Sally are the only ones who settled here with Alexander' in the 1790's; but none of this family seems to have taken any active part in town affairs.

My mother (1900-1991) lived in Sandgate most of her life, though she worked and lived in Canada from 1919-1926 and then, having married my soldier father had spells in Palestine and India.
I grew up in Sandgate, living in the block of old people's flats (my father was caretaker) called James Morris Dwellings (or The Buildings as I always called it.) It was pulled down in the mid 60s and the new Sandgate Library + new flats stand in its place.
When she lived in Sandgate she well known as a source of local information and in fact gave a talk to the Sandgate Society on the Sandgate of her youth.

In its early European history, the beachside suburb of Sandgate was something of a getaway for Brisbane residents - a place for holidays and day-trips.
After the establishment of Davie's Sandgate Hotel (which was soon known as the Belvedere Hotel), seven more hotels opened in the next twenty years or so.
The second Sandgate Hotel was opened by another early settler, William Loudin, in 1862, and the next year, the London Hotel was opened by Thomas Cahill, although this one was abandoned a year later.

The village of Sandgate was no stranger to the martial ethos; during the eighteenth century England needed to maintain its naval supremacy during conflicts with France, Spain and Holland whilst, across the Atlantic, the colonists were struggling for independence from the mother country.
Despite a population of just a few hundred Sandgate made a significant contribution to the fleet, no less than 10 warships were built and launched from its shingle beach during the 1780's.
There were three separate shipbuilding concerns clustered around Sandgate Castle.
