But Sandgate has hardly achieved a prominence in the history of the county equal to Manchester, or perhaps some other towns, but still her people are progressive, and thrifty, and reliable.
But Sandgate is not without excellent farming lands, for through the valley of Green River there are as fertile tracts as car be found in the county, but the flat lands are quite limited in extent.
In May, 1777, he enlisted to serve during the war, and was at the taking of Fort Montgomery, was at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-78, at the battle of Monmouth in 1778, with Mad Anthony WAYNE at the storming of Stony Point in 1779, and at Jamestown in July, 1781.

 Sandgate, Vermont, New England, USA
Sandgate was granted the same day as Manchester, and many of the same surnames appear in both grants.
Sandgate, Kent is on the English Channel, and the name there means "the gate to a sandy shore." The English town is noted only for the ruins of a castle built for Henry VIII, but possibly the men who got the grant for the town in Vermont had connections with the older community.
Like many of the towns in Bennington County, Sandgate was settled quite early, and by the beginning of the 19th Century the population had passed the 1,000 mark.

Town of Sandgate - Bennington County
Sandgate is bounded west by New York State, south by the Town of Arlington, east by the Town of Manchester, and north by the Town of Rupert.
Actually, the name "Sandgate" given to the town in the Charter was probably taken from a town in England.
Sandgate has been under three jurisdictions: the English, through its "Hampshire grant" of 1761; an independent State named "New Connecticut" at a convention held in Westminster January 15, 1777, which name on June 4, 1777 was changed to "Vermont"; and finally the State Constitution adopted at Windsor July 2-8, 1777.

Sandgate, Bennington County, Vermont - 1790 Census
It appears the actual census pages for Bennington County, Vermont took the column for "All Other Free Persons" a laudable step beyond, and instead included separate columns to enumerate fl residents by age and gender in the same manner as white residents.
The 1907-08 printed version of the census (published by Bureau of Census) does NOT show this distinction which was indeed made on the actual census pages.
Please note: Though a column for the number of "slaves" was included among the U. Census questions, some of the Vermont towns/townships apparently chose NOT to include a column for "slaves." When this column was not included on the census pages, the column order below will be "missing" this column as well.
