Folklore is the body of expressive culture, including tales, music, dance, legends, oral history, proverbs, jokes, popular beliefs, customs, material culture, and so forth, common to a particular population, comprising the traditions (including oral traditions) of that culture, subculture, or group.
The concept of folklore developed as part of the 19th century ideology of romantic nationalism, leading to the reshaping of oral traditions to serve modern ideological goals; only in the 20th century did ethnographers begin to attempt to record folklore without overt political goals.
There are many forms of folklore that are so common, however, that most people do not realize they are folklore, such as riddles, children's rhymes and ghost stories, rumors (including conspiracy theories), gossip, ethnic stereotypes, and holiday customs and life-cycle rituals.

At its core, The Sandman series is about stories; while, certainly, Bender is correct in saying that the title focuses on "where they come from and how they shape us," it is just as much about how we shape them (2).

Sandman, which was written in the late 80's/early 90's broke many rules in story-telling and the world of comic books.
But true Sandman fans know that Dream did not always appear in the old stories; in fact story after story was told in which he did not appear except in an obscurely associated fashion.
I highly recommend this not only to the Sandman lovers who can remember sweet dreams of the past, but also to anyone who loves stories that help us to find magic in the ordinary and bring the past back to life.

Neil Gaiman and Yoshitaka Amano, The Sandman: The Dream Hunters
There is mention of tengu (birdlike demons); oni (demons) help the onmyoji with his evil-doing; the fox must catch a baku (tapir-like eater of dreams) in her quest to save her love; and Morpheus' gryphon gatekeeper has been replaced by an itsumade (giant bird with a lion's head and snake's tail).
Gaiman's blending of traditional Japanese folklore with the Vertigo universe is all but seamless.
The insertion of Morpheus could have been jarring, but was handled with subtlety and care, the only "anachronisms," as it were, being the dream king's ever present raven, and Cain and Abel (presented here as a pair of Japanese brothers fishing the Dreaming's waters).

The Evolution of Irish Folklore in Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's Tales of Terror - Associated Content
The tales that are Irish based which involving a heavy use of lore, such as ‘The White Cat of Drumgunniol', ‘The Ghost and the Bone-setter', and ‘The Child that went with the Fairies', prove to degenerate into a farce, mocking the superstitious peasantry and avoiding the standard gothic tradition.
Those tales that are specifically set in Ireland where the idea of Irish folklore is more extended by Le Fanu, such as ‘The Familiar', prove to find a happy medium between satire towards the superstitious, and idea of the gothic, preserving a balance of both levity and suspense.
Throughout the evolution of Le Fanu's manipulation of Irish folklore, the idea of the main protagonists relation to the harbinger of death continues to change, ranging from the traditional to the newly invented, all once again in relation of the emphasis of the Irish setting.
