  Classic Albums: Metallica (2001)
The story of the making of this remarkable album is told here via exclusive interviews, archive footage and performance, with contributions from producer Bob Rock, band members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Jason Newsted.
Featuring the five singles from the album, "Enter Sandman," "Sad But True," "The Unforgiven," "Wherever I May Roam" and "Nothing Else Matters," this is the compelling story of one of the biggest selling albums of all time, a true Classic Album.
Ultimately, this is piece that will greatly appeal to Metallica fans, and those not as devoted to the band may want to give it a look as well; it’s a nice introduction to them, and it works well for both old Metallica-heads and new recruits.

  The Amherst Student Online
In memory of Sandman's dedication to his music and the local music community, the remaining members of Morphine are touring to promote their final album.
Although the mood of the album is consistent, the nature of the consistency leaves the listener feeling as if the band members sought to write one song and then rewrote it 10 more times for their album.
There is little deviation from Sandman's low register and sultry songs; consequently, what resonates is not their music, but the feeling that the band members really like or are complacent with their particular sound.

 BlackAlbum
Its supporters claim that it is still a "heavy" album, with such songs as "Enter Sandman", "Sad But True", "Of Wolf And Man" and "Holier Than Thou" proving that Metallica still had what it took to remain true to the genre's very strict limitations on what is "metal" and what is not.
To further their argument, they pointed at the intense radio and MTV coverage the Black Album received; and that even though "Enter Sandman" and "Sad But True" were "heavy", they were catchy enough to garner radio play and instant popularity.
Fans of the album claim that such topics, while not "default" heavy metal material, were a welcome and necessary change from the lyrical themes and topics from their past albums.

The Net Net: Treat Her Right -- A Retrospective
Sandman died on the way to the hospital.
Treat Her Right's third album was made in the same fashion as the first, although there are only 4 original songs on it with the rest standard blues/rock'n'roll tunes.
After the demise of Treat Her Right, Sandman and Conway hooked up with baritone saxophonist Dana Colley to form Morphine, another fine band with a sound so deep and rich it's as if it came from the bottom of a mine; the kind they get diamonds and gold from.

 A&E March 13, 1997 -- music
The band toys with how many ways Sandman can sing "I go out" against Dana Colley's two saxophones in the lyrically sparse, musically thick "Eleven O'Clock." Morphine gets a little more abrasive here than they were on previous CDs, but they still define cool, sexy music for this decade in America.
"Death of a Party," an old demo revived on this album, reflects a stagnating scene; the keyboards convey the droning boredom of a dying pop movement.
The album establishes a romantic tension with an unnamed woman that is peppered with prayer and blasphemy; he thanks God when things are going well and curses him when things aren't.

The album opens with the monstrous riffs of "Honey White" (the album's first single) and undergoes the signature Morphine mood swings from languid to roaring.
Throughout the album, Sandman continues to baffle traditionalists with his provocative two-string slide bass, while drummer Conway's soulful backbeat locks in the groove.

The album is thus both a fitting capstone to Sandman's musical career and a poignant glimpse of Morphine's unrealized future.
It is, in fact, startling to read the album's credits and see just how many instruments were used to create the spare sound of these songs: guitars, piano, cello, viola, a second bass, a second set of drums, and an organ, as well back-up singers.
Though the death of Mark Sandman ensures this will be Morphine's last studio album, there is a live album in the works, as well as a new project called The Morphine Orchestra.

While the band's earlier albums gathered momentum, each one sounding bolder and sexier than the last, "Like Swimming" makes you wish the band could mold their sound into new forms -- and for just one song, kick their noir habit.
The album's unlikely first single, "Murder for the Money," seems terribly out of place as the upbeat centerpiece of an otherwise low-lying album.
Although Sandman buoys the song with the "tritar," an instrument he invented (part bass, part guitar, played with a slide) the innovation isn't enough to make the song sound like any more than a cop show theme song.
