Sandomierz is one of the oldest and historically most significant cities in Poland.
After Polish lands were reunified in the 14th century, the former principality became the Sandomierz Voivodship, incorporating large areas of southeastern Poland.

Sandomierz is a town which is more than a thousand years old.
Approaching Sandomierz is somewhat troublesome, since the principal highway bypasses the town and not everyone knows where to turn off to reach the town centre.
The Cienisty (Shadowy) loess gorge leads straight to Sandomierz’s most interesting building – the Romanesque Church of St. James which is claimed to be the oldest brick-built church in Poland.

Between 1815 and 1837, Chmielnik belonged to the Tzoozmirer (Sandomierz) voivodship of the Polish Kingdom and between 1837-1914 to the Kielce gubernia.

The Sandomierz Bridge was opened in 1953, almost same time as the Gora Kalwaria Bridge - and the two resemble one another very much.
