Sandor Petofi (accents missing, due to limitations of my email program) is Hungary's most famous poet, a national hero who died in battle in the Revolution of 1848-49; his statue is prominent in downtown Budapest and many streets are named for him, as well as a radio network.
His most famous poem is Janos Vitez, a "folk epic" poem of 1500 lines, full of adventures, romance, humor, violence and sexiness--and it is read and memorized by children, taught in the schools, studied in universities, constantly referred to, and very much loved.
